the kitchen project

If you’ve been following along on Instagram, you know I’ve been knee-deep in my kitchen cabinet project. When we moved in 10 years ago, the kitchen was an eyesore—dark brown cabinets that made the whole space feel closed off and dreary. It was such a contrast to the bright, light, and airy vibe that truly resonates with me. While moody rooms are beautiful in their own way, they’re just not my style.

A few weeks ago, we put an offer on a home, and although we didn’t get it, it lit a fire under me to get our kitchen in “for sale” shape. Funny enough, when we viewed that home, all 14 of our cabinet doors were off the hinges! I had started this project earlier in the year, intending to take it slow and steady, but the prospect of selling pushed me to finally get it done. And honestly, I’m grateful for the nudge!

So far, I’ve painted the cabinet doors and installed new hardware. The next steps are tackling the drawer fronts, adding hardware, and trimming everything out. I’ve got even bigger plans for the kitchen sink and backsplash to add more charm and character—those are definitely next on my list!

For those of you considering a similar project, here are a few tips and tricks I’ve picked up along the way:

  1. invest in a paint sprayer: I purchased a cordless, battery-operated paint sprayer (using my trusty Dewalt 20v battery), and it was an absolute lifesaver. It made painting the cabinet doors a breeze and saved me so much time.

  2. choose the right color + sheen: I opted for Alabaster White in Satin—one of my favorite go-to shades. It’s perfect for creating a light, airy feel in the kitchen, and the satin finish adds just the right amount of sheen without being too glossy.

  3. go for hidden hinges: If your cabinet hinges are visible, consider switching to hidden ones for a cleaner look. I drilled 30 holes to install mine (and didn’t burn out my drill, thankfully!). It’s a bit of extra work, but the result is worth it. Even better, they are soft close!

  4. take it step by step: Don’t be afraid to tackle your project in bite-sized portions. I started with our pantry doors before tackling the main portion of our kitchen cabinets. Breaking it down into smaller tasks makes the project feel more manageable and less overwhelming. I highly recommend not cramming it in when you have an offer on a house though.

I’m excited to keep sharing my progress with you, especially as I move on to the next phases. Stay tuned for more updates and tips as I continue to transform this space into something that feels truly me.
